This is a video clip of the Bellydance Superstars with Regis and Kelly. Rachel Brice is one of the three dancers featured here. I absolutely adore Rachel and I really, really, really want to do the belly roll like she does. She actually teaches how you do it in the clip and I even got my instructor to show it to me today after class.
So I contracted my upper abs (like I was supposed to) and I contracted my lower abs (like I was supposed to) ... and ....
And I still can't shimmy right to save my life. Sigh.
I guess that it all boils down to practice, practice, practice and I am also doing more crunches, squats and lunges to strengthen some weak muscles I've indentified in my legs.
I also like the third dancer in the clip, y'know, the one with the finger cymbols. I like the way she manages to merge her hip drops (percussive movements) with her camel (fluid movement) into one continuous move.

Ansuya is a phenomenal zills player. You can tell she's not even thinking about her zills anymore. I wish I could get to that point one day, but I'm still thinking about them as I dance!
As for the belly rolls, they're not easy to get. The more residue you have on your tummy, the easier they are. I'm always amazed when I see a skinny girl like Rachel Brice do them so well. Don't worry, you'll get them eventually. All it takes is practice! Remember that Rachel has been doing this for 20-some years. Anyway, try doing them while you're on all fours. It's definitely easier to get the feeling for it that way.
bellydancer: No problem! I am actually considering coming for private lessons myself.
cinthia: Life is unfair in the way that I'm too skinny in a way that makes somethings difficult in bellydance but not so when I am trying to pull up a pair of jeans up my hips!!! Grr!
